Abstract

The central question of the paper is to what extent are the philosophical considerations of academic freedom today relevant for the assessment of respect or monitoring of their realization? Namely, in the increasingly obvious strengthening of the social functions of universities, the thesis that such functions prevent the realization of academic freedom and other related principles is increasingly present. On this occasion, in the context of different theoretical approaches, the important characteristics of universities, which have their origins in the protection of teaching and research freedom, are thematized. Although these approaches differ, it is almost universally accepted that the highlighted freedoms are actually fundamental activities, which can be interpreted as university activities only to the extent that they contribute to the respect and development of academic freedoms. However, their realization in the existing European integration and reform processes is increasingly questionable. Therefore, in the context of selected ethical and legal theories, it is being investigated how to normatively - morally and legally - interpret the principles that should enable a more visible and effective application of academic freedoms in achieving the mission of today's universities, taking into account the (im)possibility of achieving them , if there is no clear idea of what a university is, but only what roles or functions it should perform.
